Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our services, composting and food waste.

Q1: I am not sure if my item is compostable. Should I compost it anyway?

A1: If you are uncertain whether an item is compostable, then place that item in the trash. If you don’t know, don’t throw! Click here to view our list.

Q2: I signed up for service. How do I login to my customer portal?

A2: Click here and sign in.

Q3: Does it smell or will it cause a problem with bugs or wildlife?

A3: There should not be an issue with smell, bugs or wildlife if you use a compostable liner in the can, tie the liner off when full, and keep the lid on the can tightly sealed.

Q4: Where does KC Can take the leftover food scraps?

A4: We currently divert all food scraps from the landfill and send them to Missouri Organic to be made into rich compost.

Q5: How much does your drop-off program cost?

A5: We charge a flat rate of $12.99 per month for access to any of our drop-off locations. We are a nonprofit organization, so this fee simply covers the cost of our waste transport from the drop-off locations to our industrial composting partner, as well as the (living) wages of those we employ. Q6: I live outside of Kansas City. Can I still compost?

A6: Yes! We service the greater Kansas City area and have multiple compost drop-off locations throughout the area. See our Resources page for more details.

Q7: Do you have a subscription and need the combination to one of our drop-off stations?

A7: The code is in your Welcome Email. If you did not receive a Welcome Email, please check your Spam folder or request it by emailing sales@kccancompost.com.

Q8: Do you have suggestions on how I can reduce food waste?

A8: Yes! We have many educational blog posts that will help give you ideas. Click here to visit our blog.
